Compressed air for innovative technologies. Cooling after fusion in pipe welding

Cooling in pipe welding allows to work faster and reduce energy demand

Components and systems by VMC can be used effectively in a wide range of applications.

One of the “niche” sectors that is particularly interesting is the cooling of joints for butt welding. PE and HDPE pipes are widely used for transporting fluids in pressure to residential and productive areas and also for optic fiber cable.

This procedure consists in carrying out the butt welding by heating the joints up to fusion temperature, with specific machinery.

Then, by means of an integrated compressor, instant cooling of the material is carried out, reducing work time and lowering equipment energy consumption.

Cooling after fusion allows quicker and more accurate welding, keeping the physical and chemical features of materials unchanged, with relevant benefits such as cost reduction and less need of workforce.

Pipe welding is carried out by following these main steps:

  • Setup of equipment
  • Securing pipe
  • Facing
  • Alignment
  • Melt
  • Fusion process
  • Cooling

This is an autogenous welding method in which the sections of pipe are joined by heating up the ends up to fusion temperature, with no incorporation of filler materials, and subsequent instant cooling
